EPISODE 4: Modern Day Prophets - What Do They Look Like, Can I Be One?
INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the 5-Fold Forum Talk Show with your hosts Carrie Hurley, Carolyn Davis and myself Niccie Kliegl, and today’s episode explores the intriguing topic of modern-day prophets. We’ll dive into what it means, to be a prophet in today’s world—what characteristics they exhibit, how they serve the church… Even asking the question, 'Can I be one?'
We’re here to shed light on what it means to carry this gift and calling in a way that aligns with God’s purpose and plan.
THE PROBLEM:
Potential Struggles Related to the Topic
Confusion about Prophetic Roles: Many believers may be unsure what it means to be a prophet today, fearing it’s limited to the Biblical prophets or concerned about misunderstanding the role.
Misuse or Distrust of Prophetic Gifts: Due to misinformation or misrepresentations (the character of God), some may view prophecy with skepticism or fail to recognize true prophetic gifts within the body of Christ.
Hesitation to Embrace Prophetic Calling: Those who feel they may have a prophetic calling might hesitate to serve in this God-appointed role due to uncertainty, fear, or not knowing where to begin.
THE WORD:
Scripture-Based Guidance
CONFUSION ABOUT PROPHETIC ROLES: what it means to be a prophet today,
1 Corinthians 14:5a “I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy.”
I really see this more as the gift of prophecy as opposed to the office of the prophet because we are all called to prophesy.
1 Corinthians 12:7-8 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
Romans 12:6 -8 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
1 Corinthians 14:3 gives a clear picture of a prophet’s role today:
"But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort."
It’s not about predicting the future as the ancient prophets did, but rather speaking God’s truth to encourage, edify, and comfort the church.
Prophets today are called to share messages that align with Scripture, bringing hope and direction to God’s people.
They listen closely to God’s voice, not for self-glory but for strengthening others in their walk with Christ.
MISUSE OR DISTRUST OF PROPHETIC GIFTS: skepticism or failure to recognize true prophetic gifts within the body of Christ.
Joel 2:28 also reminds us of God’s promise in the last days:
"And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions."
This prophetic promise reassures us that the gift of prophecy is not limited by age, status, or time—it’s available to all believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Encouragement to use it (Hebrews 10:24-25 continue to stir one another up) , to continue to grow it (1 Peter 2:2), stay rooted in HS (John 15:5 vine branches)
1 John 4:1 NLT. “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”
We have been warned that there are false prophets, but we can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. We must use discernment, ask for wisdom and test what is shared.
God does not contradict Himself
1 Thessalonians 5:20-21
"Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good,"
Acts 17:11
"Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."
HESITATION TO EMBRACE PROPHETIC CALLING: God-appointed role due to uncertainty, fear, or not knowing where to begin.
2 Peter 1:20-21 NLT. “Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.”
This is an act of God, so when we come with humility in submission to the Holy Spirit then He can speak through us.
Ephesians 2:8-10 “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do”.
FOR good work (through Christ in us) not BY good work (rather by faith and grace), challenge us to grow in our faith by demonstrating good works.
God didn’t NEED to send Jesus here but he did for a reason. God doesn’t NEED you to step into your gifts, your call, or to embrace your prophetic call but you should…. If God went through all the things to get you to this time, understand that you are created with purpose and design. You can choose to say no to your gifts and call, but you were created for great things! You were not created to live small, but to partner with the God of the Universe to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth!
THE GIFT:
The Blessing of Embracing a Prophetic Calling
"The gift of prophecy blesses the church with spiritual insight, encouragement, and hope. When believers embrace this calling with humility and reverence, they serve as God’s voice to strengthen and comfort others. Prophets uplift the church and inspire faith, helping guide the body of Christ toward spiritual maturity and unity. This blessing flows when we recognize prophecy as a gift to build up, not to elevate the prophet, but to bring glory to God."
THE CHOICE:
Challenge & Action Steps
"Here’s today’s challenge: If you feel a pull toward a prophetic calling,
Take time in prayer to ask God for clarity and wisdom.
Reflect on 1 Corinthians 14:3 and ask yourself how you might encourage and strengthen others through this gift.
Seek counsel from spiritually mature leaders who can help you grow and refine this calling in a way that aligns with God’s Word.
And if you don’t feel specifically called to prophecy, pray for discernment to recognize and support those who carry this gift within the body of Christ."
