Episode 27 - Shownotes

Introduction:

Welcome back to The Presence of God! We are are joined by the insightful Pastor Tim from Elmbrook Church in Wisconsin. Together, we dive deep into Jesus’ final words in Matthew 28:19-20, often referred to as the Great Commission:

“Go and make disciples of all nations…”

But what does it really mean to “make disciples”? Is it a checklist, a class, or a calling?

Pastor Tim helps us reframe discipleship—not as a rigid process but as a lifelong journey of becoming, deeply rooted in Jesus, shaped by community, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned leader or just beginning your walk with Christ, this conversation will inspire you to follow Jesus more intentionally and disciple others with grace, humility, and faith.

The Problem:

Let’s pause and reflect—do you ever think:

  • “Discipleship is only for leaders or mature Christians”?

  • “I’m not qualified to disciple anyone—I’m still figuring things out myself.”

  • “Following Jesus feels more like checking boxes than a relationship”?

These are common thoughts—but they don’t reflect Jesus’ invitation. Discipleship is for everyone, and it’s less about perfection and more about pursuit.

The Word:

Here are the powerful truths we explored:

📖 Matthew 28:19-20

“Go and make disciples… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…”
The Great Commission is both a call to transformation
and multiplication.

📖 John 14:26

“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
The Spirit is our guide—replacing Jesus’ physical presence with His indwelling power.

📖 Jeremiah 17:9

“The heart is deceitful above all things…”
We must walk with others and the Spirit—not just our emotions—as we grow in faith.

The Gift:

When we step into real discipleship, we experience:

🌱 Formation: We’re shaped more and more into Christ’s image.
🌎
Mission: We’re empowered to share His love and truth with others.
🤝
Community: We grow through relationships that challenge and support us.
🕊️
Holy Spirit Guidance: We walk by faith, not by formulas.

The Choice:

Discipleship is not a course—it’s a calling.

  • Will you accept the invitation to grow, even when it’s messy?

  • Will you invite others into your journey and disciple in humility and grace?

  • Will you rely on the Holy Spirit daily to guide your steps?

Personal Reflection:

Ask yourself and journal with the Lord:

  • Am I treating discipleship like a program or like a personal journey?

  • What’s one way I can intentionally “abide” in Christ this week?

  • Who in my life might God be nudging me to walk alongside spiritually?

  • How am I allowing the Holy Spirit to shape my growth and decisions?

Let’s Close in Prayer:

"Lord, thank You for the beautiful call to be Your disciples—and to make disciples. Help us to grow in humility, faith, and obedience. Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to guide us, even when the path feels uncertain. May we walk closely with You, learn from You daily, and reflect Your love to others as we go. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

Takeaway from the Episode:

Discipleship isn’t about perfection or position—it’s about pursuit.
It’s a daily journey of being formed by Jesus, walking in community, and making space for others to grow too.

The Great Commission still stands—and your yes to Jesus today could transform generations.

Go live, love, learn, and lead according to the call God has on your life.
