INTRODUCTION:
"Welcome to the 5-Fold Forum Talk Show with your hosts Carrie Hurley and myself, Niccie Kliegl, and today we’re exploring The Role of the Pastor in the 5-Fold Ministry. Pastors have a vital calling to shepherd the people of God, guiding, nurturing, and protecting His flock. But what does that look like in practice? Whether you’re a pastor, feel called to pastoral ministry, or simply want to understand this role better, we’ll uncover the biblical truth about this incredible gift and its place in God’s Kingdom."
THE PROBLEM:
Potential Struggles Related to the Topic
Uncertainty About the Role: Many believers misunderstand the biblical responsibilities of a pastor.
Burnout and Overwhelm: Pastors often carry a heavy burden of leadership and may struggle with exhaustion or loneliness.
Reluctance to Submit to Spiritual Leadership: Some may resist being shepherded or mistrust authority in the church.
Misalignment of Focus: Churches may expect pastors to handle every task, distracting them from their primary calling to shepherd the flock spiritually.
THE WORD:
Scripture-Based Guidance Addressing Each Problem
Uncertainty About the Role:
Ephesians 4:11-12
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and the teachers to equip his people for works of service...”The pastoral gift is not just about preaching—it’s about equipping the saints for service.
This verse highlights the pastor’s role as an equipper, building up the church and preparing others for service in God’s Kingdom.
Hebrew word for pastor literally means to tend a flock, pasture it or graze often translated to the English “feed,” “shepherd,” “pastor,” or “herdsman.”
Greek word for pastor is only translated as “pastor” in Ephesians 4:11 - most often translated as “shepherd” or “Shepherd.”Acts 20:29
“So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood [c]—over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.”Burnout and Overwhelm:
Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Jesus reminds pastors and leaders to rely on Him for strength and rest, rather than carrying the weight alone.Matthew 11:28-30 The Message
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me, and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me, and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Reluctance to Submit to Spiritual Leadership:
Hebrews 13:17
"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you."
This verse emphasizes the importance of honoring and trusting spiritual leaders who are accountable to God.1 Peter 2:13a
For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority
Misalignment of Focus:
Acts 6:2-4
"So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables... We will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.'"
The early church recognized the need to delegate tasks, freeing leaders to focus on their primary spiritual responsibilities.
Deuteronomy 1:12-13"But you are such a heavy load to carry! How can I deal with all your problems and bickering? Choose some well-respected men from each tribe who are known for their wisdom and understanding, and I will appoint them as your leaders.”
Moses’ FIL Jethro knew that Moses was headed to burnout and provided a wise solution
THE GIFT:
The Blessing of Operating in the Pastoral Role
"Pastors are entrusted with the beautiful responsibility of shepherding God’s people. Through this gift, they bring comfort, direction, and spiritual nourishment to the church. When pastors walk faithfully in their calling, the church grows in unity, maturity, and the knowledge of Christ, reflecting the fullness of God’s love."
THE CHOICE:
Challenge & Action Steps
"Here’s your challenge for the week:
If you’re a pastor, take time to rest in the Lord and refocus on your primary role of shepherding through prayer and teaching.
If you’re not a pastor, pray for your pastor this week. Write them a note of encouragement or offer to support them in their ministry.
Consider studying Ephesians 4 to deepen your understanding of the pastor’s role in the 5-fold ministry.
Reflect on your own willingness to submit to spiritual leadership. If there’s resistance, pray for God to help you trust and honor your leaders.
Share what you’ve learned about the pastoral role with someone in your church who might benefit from this perspective."
Closing Encouragement: You Are Called to Shepherd
